ABOUT US

Daughter of a Commercial Fisherman

OUR STORY

Born and raised on Saltspring Island, and daughter of a commercial fisherman, fishing has been a part of Becky’s entire life. Her dad Chris figured he could do it himself and bought his first boat at the age of 18, then went on to purchase the Pacific Prowler in the 80’s. Some of Becky’s first memories are aboard the Prowler; out Tuna fishing with her Mom and Dad (and a number of kittens), Halibut fishing with the whole family for a summer holiday and deck-handing as a teenager. Dane grew up on a cattle ranch in Southern Alberta, but after meeting the only daughter of a commercial fisherman he was soon put to the test. Becky invited him out on a Tuna trip, and a week later and 500 nautical miles off shore Dane had caught his first ocean fish! Becky and Dane deck-handed together for many awesome summers until Dane took on another challenge and got his Captain papers. Becky and Dane started running the boat together, and now three kids and many seasons later they are still working hard to keep the family business full of great ocean adventures and tall fishing tales.

Where we fish

All our Salmon are caught off the west coast of Haida Gwaii (Area F) just as they return from the deep ocean. Caught at the peak of their lifecycle, they are extremely healthy. Rich in flavour, full of Omega oils, essential fats, and high in protein, you can't begin to compare these beautiful fish to farmed fish or fish traveled down the coast that have begun to degrade as they enter the rivers to spawn. Because of the high quality of these west coast northern fish, they are usually sold to international fish markets and fine dinning restaurants around the world. We believe bringing these fish home for our surrounding communities, with 100% traceability, is an important part in keeping our food chain wild and local.

The way we fish

The Fishing Vessel Pacific Prowler is a wood troller built in Vancouver 51 years ago and the art of trolling hasn’t changed for over a century. All our salmon are caught on a single barbless hook either on a spoon, a hoochie, or a plug being pulled or “trolled” through the water at certain depths. with only three lines out per side of the boat and 5-10 pieces of gear snapped on each line, the actual amount a fishing gear in the water is minimal. Poles on either side of the boat that are lowered during fishing spread these lines apart and with adjusting the depths, speed and type of gear used we can target salmon with very little by-catch or impact on other species.

All fish are brought in by hand one by one and promptly dressed, head off and guts removed, washed down and put in our flash freezer with temperatures to -35 to ensure the fish remains the highest of quality.
